who Co-Starred in Movies With John Wayne"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Welcome to the first of three, possibly four-part article on what I hope will be a definitive list of the numerous co-stars of JW who were also known for their singing careers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Edit: Possibly 5 part<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will also include singers\/actors who appeared in a John Wayne film but did not actually play any scenes with him such as Frank Sinatra who performed a cameo role in \u201cCast A Giant Shadow\u201d as well as Paul Anka and Tommy Sands who graced the screen in \u201cThe Longest Day\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This, the first part will deal with what I term the pretty boy gang of performers that came to prominence from the late-1950s \/ early 1960s before dying a professional death, musically anyway, at the hands of the British invasion initiated by The Beatles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The following are listed chronologically in terms of their appearance in a John Wayne loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"802\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Sea-Chase-2.jpg\" alt=\"The Sea Chase movie poster\" movies such as \u201cGun Belt\u201d and \u201cTrack of the Cat\u201d, Tab made quite a splash in the war movie \u201cBattle Cry\u201d, released in 1955. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Warner Bros took note and signed him to a contract, adding him to the cast of \u201cThe Sea Chase\u201d in which he found himself playing German crew member cadet Wesser. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was essentially on board in order to attract the teenage audience but, despite being listed fifth in the opening credits, it\u2019s hard to remember exactly how much of an impact he made in a supporting cast that also included James Arness, Claude Akins and Paul Fix, but it was a step in the right direction for Hunter\u2019s acting career.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the period from 1955 to 1959 in which Hunter was the most popular star on the Warner Bros roster, it was decided he would make an ideal singing idol. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His very first record, \u201cYoung Love\u201d, released in 1957, hit the top spot on the Billboard chart, selling over two million copies in the process and adding another string to Tab\u2019s bow. In the same year he had another hit with \u201cNinety-Nine Ways\u201d which got to number eleven in the charts but after that, his singing career never really hit the heights again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He still cut a dash on the big screen though, hitting a career peak towards the end of the 1950s in movies such as \u201cGunman\u2019s Walk\u201d and the musical \u201cDamn Yankees, before his leading man status was revoked and Tab ended up as more of a supporting actor than anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, it must have been good while it lasted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ricky_Nelson_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CRio_Bravo%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Ricky Nelson \u2013 \u201cRio Bravo\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ricky was still only eighteen years old when he won the role of cool gunslinger Colorado Ryan opposite John Wayne and Dean Martin in the classic Western \u201cRio Bravo\u201d, released in 1959. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"gb-block-image gb-block-image-aba2f071\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1023\" height=\"578\" class=\"gb-image gb-image-aba2f071\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/rio-bravo-dean-martin-john-wayne.jpg\" alt=\"rio-bravo-dean-martin-john-wayne\" title=\"rio-bravo-dean-martin-john-wayne\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/rio-bravo-dean-martin-john-wayne.jpg 1023w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/rio-bravo-dean-martin-john-wayne-728x411.jpg 728w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1023px) 100vw, 1023px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time he was cast Ricky as Colorado, he was not only already established as a TV star in \u201cThe Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet Show\u201d, a popular American sitcom featuring the real-life Nelson family which ran for fourteen years but had also enjoyed chart success as a teen singing idol, starting in 1957 with \u201cA Teenager\u2019s Romance\u201d, which went to number two in the charts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Todd McCarthy, author of the Howard Hawks biography \u201cThe Grey Fox of Hollywood\u201d, Hawks \u201crealised that Nelson had no special skills as an actor [so decided] to give him something to do with his hands, , notably rubbing the side of his nose \u2026 to show he was thinking\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McCarthy goes on to write that \u201cNelson\u2019s awkwardness is evident in the stiff, posed way he stands\u2026, but Hawks felt Nelson did well enough in the picture and was convinced that his presence added enormously to its box-office draw\u201d, so it should come as no surprise that Ricky is listed third in the opening credits to the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was inevitable that Ricky would get to sing in \u201cRio Bravo\u201d, Colorado being at the centre of one of the most memorable scenes in the&nbsp;film in which he enjoys a singing session with Dude (Dean Martin) and Stumpy (Walter Brennan). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It serves to emphasise the solidarity between the three of them and John T. Chance (JW) who watches the performance with a beaming smile on his face. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ricky and Dean croon \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/john-wayne-his-rifle-pony-and-hat\/\">My Rifle, Pony and Me<\/a>\u201d together before Brennan joins in with \u201cCindy\u201d, a song that Ricky had apparently already covered the year before in an episode of \u201cOzzie and Harriet\u201d. He also later recorded \u201cRestless Kid\u201d, a song written for the film by Johnny Cash but which didn\u2019t feature in the movie.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from guitar-slinging, Colorado also shows some fancy moves with his gun when he helps Chance out in a street fight outside the aptly named Alamo Hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ricky continued with his successful singing career after appearing in \u201cRio Bravo\u201d, going on to score another sixteen top ten hits including two number one singles, \u201cPoor Little Fool\u201d and \u201cTravelin\u2019 Man\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His last big hit was \u201cGarden Party\u201d which was released in 1974 and reached number six in the charts. By then Ricky\u2019s acting career had taken second place to recording and live performances, his last notable big screen appearance being in the romantic \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevideobeat.com\/rock-roll-movies\/love-kisses-1965.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Love and Kisses<\/a>\u201d, released in 1965.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After that his acting career was mainly confined to various TV movies and shows such as \u201cMcCloud\u201d and \u201cThe Streets of San Francisco\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Frankie_Avalon_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CThe_Alamo%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Frankie Avalon \u2013 \u201cThe Alamo\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Next up in the list of teen heart-throbs shoe-horned into John Wayne movies of the time in order to appeal to a younger audience is actor and singer Frankie Avalon. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"728\" height=\"409\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/alamo2004-2.jpg\" alt=\"John Wayne in The Alamo poster\" class=\"wp-image-2914\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/alamo2004-2.jpg 728w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/alamo2004-2-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Despite being grouped together with other manufactured teen idols of his generation such as Fabian, Tommy Sands, and Bobby Rydell et al, Frankie was also a genuine child prodigy, his expertise with the trumpet garnering him a recording contract at the age of fourteen with RCA.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avalon played the role of Smitty in \u201cThe Alamo\u201d, the youngest of Crockett\u2019s Tennesseans, and one of the few to make it out alive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wayne was so sure that Avalon would pull in the teenage audience just as Ricky Nelson did with \u201cRio Bravo\u201d that he had the singer placed prominently in fourth place on the opening credit list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wayne was quoted as saying \u201cWe\u2019re not cutting any bit of any scene in which Frankie appears. I believe he is the finest young talent I\u2019ve seen in a long time\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frankie recorded four songs from the film on an EP: \u201cBallad of the Alamo\u201d, \u201cTennessee Babe\u201d, \u201cThe Green Leaves of Summer\u201d and Here\u2019s to the Ladies\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avalon was also filmed singing \u201cHere\u2019s to the Ladies\u201d for the movie but the scene was deleted from the roadshow version of \u201cThe Alamo\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to his appearance in the Wayne epic, Frankie enjoyed his biggest chart success with two singles, \u201cVenus\u201d, the song he will forever be associated with, and \u201cWhy\u201d in 1959.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Juggling singing and acting over the ensuing years, Frankie achieved ever-lasting cult status in a series of innocuous teen-surf movies alongside pneumatic co-star Annette Funicello with titles such as \u201cMuscle Beach Party\u201d and \u201cPajama Party\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also teamed up with his singing \u201crival\u201d Fabian in the 1966 stock car movie \u201cFireball 500\u201d, with Annette also along for the ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frankie\u2019s career received a significant boost when he appeared in the hugely successful 1978 movie musical \u201cGrease\u201d, his character Teen Angel scoring big with a new generation of teenagers singing a song entitled \u201cBeauty School Dropout\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fabian_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CNorth_to_Alaska%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CThe_Longest_Day%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Fabian \u2013 \u201cNorth to Alaska\u201d \/ \u201cThe Longest Day\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to his appearance as lovelorn Billy Pratt, younger brother of panhandler George Pratt (Stewart Granger) in the turn-of-the-century gold rush comedy, \u201cNorth to Alaska, Fabian, or Fabian Forte as he was known in some circles, had already dented the charts with three top ten singles, \u201cTurn Me Loose\u201d, \u201cTiger\u201d and \u201cHound Dog Man\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"794\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/North-To-Alaska-1.jpg\" alt=\"North To Alaska poster image\" class=\"wp-image-3753\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/North-To-Alaska-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/North-To-Alaska-1-709x550.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This last single served as the theme tune to a movie of the same name, directed by no less than Don Siegel, with Fabian cast opposite Stuart Whitman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now under contract to 20th Century Fox, Fabian was a shoo-in for the role opposite John Wayne, and naturally, he got to sing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The song is called \u201cIf You Knew\u201d, a lachrymose tune Fabian warbles to the captive audience of Capucine, who sits in a bath whilst being serenaded from behind a curtain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The song, which should have been subtitled \u201cIf You Knew (the Kid Couldn\u2019t Sing Why Is He Even In This Movie)\u201d plus the occasional worried frown from <a href=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/19-more-of-john-waynes-leading-ladies\/\">Capucine<\/a> tells you all you need to know about Mr. Forte. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a singer, he was a passable actor, as he showed later on in his career, but he is definitely not in the league of Ricky or Frankie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fabian didn\u2019t actually get to sing the main theme tune to the movie which, as recorded by Johnny Horton, was quite a big hit at the time, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in America. I wonder why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve only caught this film a couple of times and each time I watch it I\u2019m captivated more by Fabian\u2019s immovable quaff than I am anything else. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It appears to have been cemented to the front of his head, stubbornly maintaining its shape despite numerous punches to Fabian\u2019s face whilst rolling around in the mud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The singer also played a cameo role in the WWII epic \u201cThe Longest Day\u201d, his character listed in various sources as Private Forte, which was obviously someone\u2019s idea of an in-joke. He shared no scenes with John Wayne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although enjoying limited chart success for a few more years Fabian worked on his acting career and, along with appearances in TV shows such as \u201cThe Rat Patrol\u201d and \u201cThe Virginian\u201d made a pretty good account of himself in movies including \u201cThe Longest Day\u201d, although he and JW didn\u2019t actually share any screen time, and \u201cA Bullet for Pretty Boy Floyd\u201d, released in 1970 and in which he played the title role of the infamous real-life gangster.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tommy_Sands_%E2%80%9CThe_Longest_Day%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Tommy Sands \/ \u201cThe Longest Day\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Known as the \u201cSingin\u2019 Idol\u201d with a number one hit in 1957 entitled \u201cTeen-Age Crush\u201d, Tommy Sands eventually became more famous for marrying Nancy Sinatra in 1960, two years before he appeared as Private Hunt in \u201cThe Longest Day\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"gb-block-image gb-block-image-4e451e42\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"989\" height=\"758\" class=\"gb-image gb-image-4e451e42\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/the-longest-day-original.jpg\" alt=\"The Longest Day with John Wayne\" title=\"the-longest-day-original\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/the-longest-day-original.jpg 989w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/the-longest-day-original-718x550.jpg 718w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 989px) 100vw, 989px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The couple divorced in 1965, Sands appearing that year in the Frank Sinatra WWII movie \u201cNone But the Brave\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His singing career eventually took precedence over his acting, although Sands appeared on occasion in TV shows including \u201cCombat!\u201d and \u201cHawaii Five-O\u201d. He still featured in the charts but did not enjoy that much success after the 1960s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Paul_Anka_%E2%80%9CThe_Longest_Day%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Paul Anka \/ \u201cThe Longest Day\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul Anka was a real genuine teen idol, hitting the top of the charts at the callow age of sixteen in 1957 with his self-penned hit \u201cDiana\u201d, which reached number two in the American charts as well as becoming a number one hit in the UK. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"959\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/paul-anka.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/paul-anka.jpeg 750w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/paul-anka-430x550.jpeg 430w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>His appearance as Private Lowell in \u201cThe Longest Day\u201d was the highest profile role of his acting career, never reaching the heights of success he enjoyed as both a singer and a songwriter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anka clocked up a total of ten top ten singles in the following years including two number one hits with \u201cLonely Boy\u201d and \u201cYou\u2019re Having My Baby\u201d, as well as writing \u201cIt Doesn\u2019t Matter Anymore\u201d for Buddy Holly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To top it all off Anka created a huge hit for Frank Sinatra in 1969 when he rewrote the French lyrics to a song called \u201cComme d&#8217;habitude\u201d, now better known as \u201cMy Way\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bobby_Vinton_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CBig_Jake%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CThe_Train_Robbers%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Bobby Vinton \u2013 \u201cBig Jake\u201d \/ \u201cThe Train Robbers\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>More of a lounge singer than a bona fide teen idol Bobby Vinton scored approximately nine top ten singles of which four, including \u201cRoses Are Red My Love\u201d and \u201cBlue Velvet\u201d, made it to the number one spot. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"753\" height=\"528\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Train-Robbers.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6701\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Train-Robbers.jpeg 753w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Train-Robbers-728x510.jpeg 728w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 753px) 100vw, 753px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Not having appeared on the big screen for six years Vinton then landed the role in 1971 of Jeff McCandles in \u201cBig Jake\u201d, his character the son of Jake McCandles, as played by John Wayne. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeff\u2019s son, Little Jake (Ethan Wayne) is kidnapped at the beginning of the film by the notorious Fain gang, led by John Fain (Richard Boone). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the attack, Jeff is seriously wounded but he still manages to kill two of Fain\u2019s gang. After that Vinton remains out of the picture until he and Little Jeff are reunited at the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vinton must have impressed Wayne one way or the other because two years later he pops up in another JW Western, \u201cThe Train Robbers\u201d, in which the singer, as Ben Young, takes off into the desert with Lane (JW) and several of his compatriots to recover half-a-million dollars of buried gold at the behest of a mysterious lady known as Lily Lowe (<a href=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/19-more-of-john-waynes-leading-ladies\/\">Ann-Margret<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Although Vinton gets to share a bit more screen time with JW than he did in \u201cBig Jake\u201d both his role and the film itself proved to be fairly inconsequential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vinton\u2019s singing career is definitely more noteworthy than that of his occasional stint as an actor, the singer maintaining a fairly successful profile as a crooner after the British invasion in 1964 and eventually notching up more number one hits than any other American singer in the decade from 1962 to 1972. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He enjoyed his last big hit in 1974 with \u201cMy Melody of Love\u201d which climbed to number three in the charts. As an addendum Vinton\u2019s son Robert played the role of his father in the gangster epic \u201cGoodfellas\u201d in 1994, singing \u201cRoses Are Red My Love\u201d in a nightclub sequence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"JW_Singing_Co-Stars_Part_2\"><\/span>JW Singing Co-Stars Part 2<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re now going to take a look at what I consider to be middle-of-the-road singers as opposed to those revered solely by a teenage audience. These artistes also enjoyed various levels of success in terms of chart hits.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Walter_Brennan_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CTwo_Fisted_Law%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CTexas_Cyclone%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CBaby_Face%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CDakota%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CRed_River%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CHow_the_West_Was_Won%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CRio_Bravo%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Walter Brennan \u2013 \u201cTwo Fisted Law\u201d, \u201cTexas Cyclone\u201d, \u201cBaby Face\u201d, \u201cDakota\u201d, \u201cRed River\u201d, \u201cHow the West Was Won\u201d, \u201cRio Bravo\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Researching this article has brought up a number of facts I was previously unaware of and one of them is that Walter Brennan had a hit single in 1962 that peaked at number 5 in the American charts called \u201cOld Rivers\u201d, backed by the Johnny Mann singers. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/How-West-1.jpg\" alt=\"How The West Was On image\" class=\"wp-image-3745\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/How-West-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/How-West-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/How-West-1-550x550.jpg 550w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/How-West-1-65x65.jpg 65w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/How-West-1-220x220.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>To be fair ole Walt doesn\u2019t exactly sing so much as croak out the lyrics in that wonderfully distinctive old-timer&#8217;s voice of his but the words most definitely seem to come from the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to this Brennan made his chart debut with the single \u201cDutchman\u2019s Gold\u201d, released in 1960 and reaching number 30 in the charts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He followed up \u201cOld Rivers\u201d with \u201cMama Sang a Song\u201d which peaked at 38 in the charts and, apart from \u201cHoudini\u201d which only got to chart position 100, that was it hit-wise for Walter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite all of the aforementioned recordings being more spoken-word than crooning, Brennan could actually sing when required, hitting the high note at the end of \u201cGet Along Home, Cindy\u201d from \u201cRio Bravo\u201d in harmony with Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Roy_Rogers_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CDark_Command%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Roy Rogers \u2013 \u201cDark Command\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As lead vocalist and rhythm\/lead guitarist with the Sons of the Pioneers, Roy, or Leonard Sly as he was known back then, enjoyed early success with \u201cTumbling Tumbleweeds\u201d which hit the charts of 1934 at number 13. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/dark-command-2.jpg\" alt=\"John Wayne in Dark Command\" class=\"wp-image-2944\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Required to leave the group in order to fulfill his film contract with Republic in 1937, Roy struck out on his own and, over the following decades, dented the country charts with four top ten singles including \u201cBlue Shadows on the Trail\u201d and \u201cPecos Bill\u201d, in which he was reunited with the Sons of the Pioneers, as well as \u201cMy Chickashay Girl\u201d and \u201cStampede\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1974 his single \u201cHoppy, Gene and Me\u201d reached number 15 in the country charts, although for some strange reason what was probably his most famous recording, \u201cHappy Trails\u201d, appears not to have charted anywhere at all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The song, in which he duets with his wife Dale, who also wrote it, played over the end credits of their popular TV show back in the 1940s \/ 1950s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other well-liked non-chart songs by Rogers include \u201cDon\u2019t Fence Me In\u201d, \u201cThe Yellow Rose of Texas\u201d and \u201cWay Out There\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roy only got to appear with John Wayne once in the film \u201cDark Command\u201d, released in 1940, in which he played against type as a killer and a racist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this bold move on the singer and actor to show a darker side to his screen persona Wayne wasn\u2019t too impressed, stating years later that \u201cRoy Rogers.. wasn\u2019t a cowboy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was a goddam country singer from Ohio\u2026 Rogers wasn\u2019t any actor. He was barely a singer\u201d. I reckon there are an awful lot of people out there even now who would take JW to task on that last sentence of his.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dean_Martin_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CRio_Bravo%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CThe_Sons_of_Katie_Elder%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Dean Martin &#8211; \u201cRio Bravo\u201d \/ \u201cThe Sons of Katie Elder\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dino Paul Crocetti aka Dean Martin aka \u201cThe King of Cool\u201d was possessed of a singing persona that can at best be described as relaxed to the point of unconsciousness. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"297\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/3Rio-Bravo.jpg\" alt=\"John Wayne Quiz Rio Bravo\" class=\"wp-image-5712\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>However, he gave his peers such as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennet a run for their money when it came to his ability to deliver a song. In a singing career that spanned four decades, Dino enjoyed fourteen top twenty American hits of which four were posthumous, indicative of the continuing popularity he enjoyed even after his death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of his chart successes can be divided into two categories, those he recorded for the Capitol label between 1948 to 1961 and the records he made for Reprise from 1962 to 1973. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His most popular Capitol hits include \u201cMemories Are Made of This\u201d which hit the number one spot in 1955 and the earlier \u201cThat\u2019s Amore\u201d, a number two hit from 1953 which featured the same year in the Martin \/ Lewis movie \u201cThe Caddy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Striking out on his own after the split from Jerry Lewis in 1956 he went on to deliver a memorable portrayal of a man wrestling with alcoholism in the classic Howards Hawks Western \u201cRio Bravo\u201d, serenading a grinning John Wayne as he and Ricky Nelson duetted on \u201cMy Rifle, Pony and Me\u201d, as well as recording the main theme to the film. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Martin\u2019s performance as an alcoholic was extremely convincing, his off-screen love of the hard stuff was apparently all an act, Sinatra once remarking that he \u201cspilt more than Martin ever drank\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1965 Martin teamed up with Wayne once more in \u201cThe Sons of Katie Elder\u201d, playing Duke\u2019s younger brother Tom. No singing this time though. Just pure action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His popularity soared even more when \u201cThe Dean Martin Show\u201d aired on TV the same year, running for nine years, with Wayne among the many famous guests to make an appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> By this time he had signed with Frank Sinatra\u2019s Reprise label, topping the American charts in 1964 with \u201cEverybody Loves Somebody Sometime\u201d, in the process knocking those British upstarts The Beatles from the number one spot they had occupied with \u201cA Hard Day\u2019s Night\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other hits for Reprise included \u201cThe Door Is Still Open to My Heart\u201d and \u201cI Will\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PS The aforementioned four posthumous hits were all the same song, \u201cLet It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!\u201d which charted four years running from 2019 to 2022.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Legend<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lee_Marvin_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CThe_Comancheros_%E2%80%9CThe_Man_Who_Shot_Liberty_Valance%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CDonovans_Reef%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Lee Marvin \u2013&nbsp; \u201cThe Comancheros \/ \u201cThe Man Who Shot Liberty Valance\u201d \/ \u201cDonovan\u2019s Reef\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee Marvin enjoyed a drunken harmony-free duet with John Wayne in \u201cThe Comancheros\u201d when they serenaded each other with the song \u2018Red Wing\u2019, a contemporary review in the New York Times stating that Marvin\u2019s singing was \u201cso noisy he just has to be shot\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"920\" height=\"690\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/the_comancheros.jpg\" alt=\"Poster of The Comancheros with John Wayne\" class=\"wp-image-4832\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/the_comancheros.jpg 920w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/the_comancheros-728x546.jpg 728w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 920px) 100vw, 920px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Wayne duly obliged, an indication of his own feelings when it came to hearing his co-star murder a song that was presumably close to his heart on having previously sung it himself in the 1943 movie \u201cIn Old Oklahoma\u201d aka \u201cWar of the Wildcats\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one, however, could have predicted he would eventually enjoy a huge UK number one hit single with the song \u201cWandrin\u2019 Star\u201d that featured in the screen musical \u201cPaint Your Wagon\u201d. According to his co-star Jean Seberg, his voice was \u201clike rain gurgling down a rusty pipe\u201d but record buyers over here in England were so enamoured of Marvin\u2019s croaking rendition of the song that upon its release in March of 1970 it knocked the Beatles and their final single \u201cLet It Be\u201d off the top of the charts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As if that wasn\u2019t enough to take on board the B-side featured Clint Eastwood crooning \u201cI Talk to the Trees\u201d. The less said about that the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marvin had occasionally warbled a song or two in some of his previous movies including an ensemble version of \u201cBye Bye Blackbird\u201d in \u201cPete Kelly\u2019s Blues\u201d, released back in 1955 and a solo rendition of \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d in the comedy Western \u201cCat Ballou\u201d, Marvin winning an Oscar for Best Actor for his twin roles as drunken bum Kid Shelleen and murderous gun for hire Tim Strawn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re interested he also sang what can only be described as a rehearsal for \u201cWandrin\u2019 Star\u201d with his interpretation of \u201cDown in the Cane Break\u201d from the WWII movie \u201cHell in the Pacific, released in 1967.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has to be said that as a singer, Lee Marvin was a great actor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Robert_Mitchum_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CEl_Dorado%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CThe_Longest_Day%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Robert Mitchum \u2013 \u201cEl Dorado\u201d \/ \u201cThe Longest Day\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Having exercised his singing pipes in a few of his earlier films actor Robert Mitchum tickled the US charts in 1958 with his recording of \u201cThe Ballad of Thunder Road\u201d, the theme tune to the crime drama \u201cThunder Road\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/el-dorado.jpeg\" alt=\"El Dorado poster with John Wayne\" class=\"wp-image-5785\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/el-dorado.jpeg 780w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/el-dorado-728x485.jpeg 728w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Mitchum supplied the lyrics with music composed by Jack Marshall, the record charting at position 62 with a bullet, returning again to the charts upon its re-release four years later at number 65.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The year before, in 1957, the actor went into the studio and recorded an album of calypso songs entitled \u201cCalypso\u2026 Is Like So\u2026\u201d, the LP the result of Mitchum\u2019s enthusiasm for the musical form whilst on location in the Tobago Islands for the film \u201cHeaven Knows Mr. Alison\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Songs such as \u201cCoconut Water\u201d and \u201cMama, Looka Boo Boo\u201d are delivered in the actors rich baritone complete with the idioms and accent associated with calypso music, something that would in this day and age be condemned as cultural appropriation and also something the famously laid back actor wouldn\u2019t have given a damn about one way or the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bob also issued an album in 1967 entitled \u201cThat Man, Robert Mitchum\u2026 Sings\u201d, which includes his number 6 country chart hit \u201cLittle Old Wine Drinker Me\u201d which was also covered the same year by Dean Martin. Dino\u2019s version outsold Mitchum\u2019s but I\u2019m assuming they still stayed friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you also check out Bob\u2019s films you\u2019ll hear him singing in quite a few, most notably in \u201cRachel and the Stranger\u201d where he duets with co-star `Loretta Young on two songs, \u201cJust Like Me\u201d and \u201cSummer Song\u201d. A 78rpm record was issued of the soundtrack to the film which included the aforementioned tunes and four more songs that featured in the movie.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the murderous Reverend Harry Powell in the classic 1955 thriller \u201cNight of the Hunter\u201d Mitchum serenades two children hiding in a house protected by a kindly woman played by Lillian Gish with the gospel song \u201cLeaning on the Everlasting Arms\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Halfway through the song, it turns into a weird duet with Gish and Mitchum singing in harmony, he trying to figure out how to get his hands on the children whilst Gish sits in the house with a loaded shotgun.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other films featuring his singing include \u201cPursued\u201d, a Western film noir released in 1947 with Mitchum crooning \u201cDanny Boy\u201d and the classic cowboy song \u201cStreets of Laredo\u201d. He also sang the theme tune to the 1969 Western \u201cYoung Billy Young\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Todd McCarthy, author of the Howards Hawks biography \u201cThe Grey Fox of Hollywood\u201d, a pre-release version of \u201cEl Dorado\u201d featured \u201ca musical number reminiscent of <em>Rio Bravo<\/em>\u201d which was cut after the director\u2019s son, Gregg Hawks, told his daddy that \u201ca sheriff shouldn\u2019t sing\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seeing as Mitchum played the sheriff then he must have contributed to the now lost on the cutting room floor group singalong, which is a real shame. It\u2019s also probably why Gregg Hawks never made it as a film director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"JW_Singing_Co-Stars_Part_3\"><\/span>JW Singing Co-Stars Part 3<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I was going to do a spot here at the beginning on Frank Sinatra, seeing as he played a cameo&nbsp;in \u201cCast A Giant Shadow\u201d but I figured what else could you write about him that hasn\u2019t already been written? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The guy had more chart hits and success than most of the other singers mentioned so far all put together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suffice it to say he really was \u2019Chairman of the Board\u2019, \u2018The Voice\u2019, \u2018Swoonatra\u2019 \u2013 you name it, he was it and he did it his way whether anyone else liked it or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"James_Stewart_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CThe_Man_Who_Shot_Liberty_Valance%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CThe_Shootist%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>James Stewart \u2013 \u201cThe Man Who Shot Liberty Valance\u201d \/ \u201cThe Shootist\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As already mentioned it\u2019s amazing what you find when researching for articles such as this and I was somewhat amazed myself to find out that James Stewart was actually once seriously considered to be a potential singing romantic lead.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1015\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Man-Who-Shot-Liberty-V-1.jpg\" alt=\"Man Who Shot Liberty Valance poster\" class=\"wp-image-3554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Man-Who-Shot-Liberty-V-1.jpg 1015w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Man-Who-Shot-Liberty-V-1-558x550.jpg 558w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Man-Who-Shot-Liberty-V-1-65x65.jpg 65w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1015px) 100vw, 1015px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p> He can be found warbling his way through the song \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/cbyOCKU16gI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Easy To Love<\/a>\u201d in the 1936 MGM musical \u201cBorn to Dance\u201d, Mr. Stewart demonstrating his rug-cutting expertise was even worse than his singing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Easy To Love | Born to Dance | Warner Archive\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OLT9mPASxOo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On that subject, according to the composer Cole Porter, who wrote the songs for the film, \u201che sings far from well, although he has some nice notes in his voice\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily for Stewart, as well as the audience, most of the other songs he sang in the film were&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>cast ensemble efforts. Prior to this, whilst a student at Princeton, Stewart recorded a single entitled \u201cDay After Day\u201d, issued on the Columbia label. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was put out to publicise the production of a play entitled \u201cSpanish Blades\u201d that Stewart appeared in as a member of the Princeton Triangle Club. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no evidence it dented the music charts in any way whatsoever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from appearing in a supporting role in the Nelson Eddy \/ Jeanette MacDonald musical \u201cRose Marie\u201d in 1936 that was it for the actor\u2019s singing career, at that point anyway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He did risk alienating his audience in the classic 1940 comedy \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Philadelphia_Story_(film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Philadelphia Story<\/a>\u201d though, drunkenly delivering his version of \u201cSomewhere Over the Rainbow\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following year he took the lead in the musical&nbsp; \u201cPot O\u2019 Gold\u201d and sang the song \u201cWhen Johnny Toots His Horn\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also sang a short duet with Donna Reed in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/It%27s_a_Wonderful_Life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">It\u2019s A Wonderful Life<\/a>\u201d with the song \u201cBuffalo Girls (Won\u2019t You Come Out Tonight\u201d), Ms. Reed demonstrating her musical inability to carry a note at the same time. In between&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a suggestion that Stewart\u2019s screen <a href=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/james-stewart-anthony-mann-westerns-2\/\">partnership with Anthony Mann<\/a>, in which actor and director delivered classic Westerns such as \u201cWinchester \u201873\u201d and \u201cThe Man from Laramie\u201d, was derailed when Stewart insisted on singing in the 1957 Western \u201cNight Passage\u201d, Mann eventually being replaced by James Neilson. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An accomplished accordion player, Stewart sang and played the instrument in two songs, \u201cFollow the River\u201d and \u201cYou Can\u2019t Get Far Without A Railroad\u201d, the latter performed twice in the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"James Stewart - Night Passage - You Can&#039;t Get Far Without a Railroad\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lekmqnTPcO4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The actor released a single entitled \u201cThe Legend of Shenandoah\u201d, a song \u2018inspired\u2019 by the movie \u201cShenandoah\u201d, directed by Andrew V.McLaglen in 1965.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Issued on the Decca label Stewart delivers the song in more of a spoken-word style with backing from a chorus singing the tune to the traditional song of the same name. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the actor stretched his singing voice in the 1978 musical film \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0077890\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Magic of Lassie\u201d<\/a>. It wasn\u2019t too much of a stretch for him seeing as Holloway had already played the role in the original stage musical in both the London West End and on Broadway.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Holloway released a number of albums featuring comedy monologues such as \u201cThe Lion and Albert\u201d and \u201cGuarding the Gasworks\u201d, the actor\/singer does not appear to have actually scored a hit song in the charts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Kirk_Douglas_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CIn_Harms_Way%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CCast_A_Giant_Shadow%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CThe_War_Wagon%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Kirk Douglas \u2013 \u201cIn Harm\u2019s Way\u201d \/ \u201cCast A Giant Shadow\u201d \/ \u201cThe War Wagon\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As far as I can make out Kirk Douglas sang for the first time on the big screen in the Howard Hawks Western \u201cThe Big Sky\u201d, released in 1952 and in which he duets with Dewey Martin on the song \u201cWhiskey, Leave Me Alone\u201d, a tune which coincidentally also featured in the JW \/ Howard Hawks film \u201cHatari!\u201d a decade later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years later he appeared in the Western \u201cMan Without A Star\u201d, strumming a banjo and singing a verse from a song called \u201cThe Moon Grew Brighter\u201d. Douglas recorded a full version of the song which was later appeared as the B-side of a single, the A-side featuring a song entitled \u201cA Whale of A Tale\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"920\" height=\"694\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/cast-a-giant-shadow.jpg\" alt=\"Cast a Giant Shadow with John Wayne\" class=\"wp-image-5879\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/cast-a-giant-shadow.jpg 920w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/cast-a-giant-shadow-728x550.jpg 728w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 920px) 100vw, 920px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Walt persuaded Kirk to sing the song in the underwater epic \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/20000-Leagues-Under-the-Sea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea<\/a>\u201d, released in 1954. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The studio issued the recording along with the theme tune from the film and Kirk\u2019s effort was apparently very popular on the kiddie charts of the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview quite a few years later the actor is quoted as saying \u201cI\u2019ve made 76 movies, and I sang in only a few of them\u2026 but \u2018Whale of A Tale\u2019 was the most wonderful song I ever sang. It was a really rollicking song that everyone liked\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever Kirk Douglas appeared over here in the UK on TV either as a talk-show guest or on an awards show he would invariably break into song, usually with a tune entitled \u201cMaybe It\u2019s Because I\u2019m A Londoner\u201d, which of course Mr. Douglas most definitely wasn\u2019t. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He did like the sound of his own voice though, that\u2019s for sure, giving his tonsils a work whenever the opportunity came along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kirk first got to team up with JW in the Otto Preminger WWII Naval film \u201cIn Harm\u2019s Way\u201d. Typically, he played an emotionally unstable character who, after raping a young nurse who then commits suicide, redeems himself by discovering the whereabouts of a huge seaborne&nbsp;Japanese task force and dying in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Duke played a cameo role and helped to finance a pet project of Kirk\u2019s with the film \u201cCast a Giant Shadow\u201d, in which Douglas played Mickey Marcus, a real-life character who helped organise the defence of Israel when it was attacked by various Arab factions in 1948.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A couple of years later the two actors co-starred in \u201cThe War Wagon\u201d, a Western in which Douglas played gun for hire Lomax. By a neat coincidence, the following singer also appeared in the same film&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Howard_Keel_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CThe_War_Wagon%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Howard Keel \u2013 \u201cThe War Wagon\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Howard Keel was a thigh-slapping baritone singer known mainly for his roles in some of the most popular Hollywood musicals of the 1950s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to this, he had made his name on Broadway in \u201cOklahoma!\u201d before graduating to the big screen with an offer of a contract with MGM. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"920\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/4-The-War-Wagon-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/4-The-War-Wagon-1.jpg 685w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/4-The-War-Wagon-1-410x550.jpg 410w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 685px) 100vw, 685px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>He starred in no less than a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0444476\/bio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dozen musicals<\/a> for the studio including \u201cAnnie Get Your Gun\u201d, \u201cCalamity Jane\u201d, \u201cKiss Me Kate\u201d and the ever-popular \u201cSeven Brides for Seven Brothers\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In between the musicals, Keel also got to display his serious acting skills in dramas such as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ride,_Vaquero!\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ride Vaquero!<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Desperate_Search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Desperate Search<\/a>\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1967 he turned up in a non-singing supporting role as a Native American by the name of Levi Walking Bear alongside John Wayne and Kirk Douglas in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/john-wayne-shootouts\/\">The War Wagon<\/a>\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously going for laughs rather than credibility, at one point in the film Keel ends up trying to avoid a bullet between the eyes as Emilio Fernandez, playing a murderous Mexican Bandido, attempts to shoot bottles of tequila placed precariously upon Walking Bears&#8217; head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amazingly Keel didn\u2019t actually embark on a solo recording career until he was in his sixties, returning to the stage in the West End of London as well as embarking upon a series of tours and capitalising on his newfound fame oil baron Clayton Farrow in the popular TV series \u201cDallas\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He proved so popular in the role that Keel stayed with the show for ten years and over 200 episodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keel never had a hit single in the charts but he did fairly well album-wise, hitting the UK charts at number six with the LP \u201cAnd I Love Her So\u201d in 1984. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following year his follow-up album \u201cReminiscing: The Howard Keel Collection\u201d also charted in the UK at number 20, coincidentally also spending 20 weeks in the UK charts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Popular songs recorded by Howard Keel, specifically from his MGM musical days include \u201cBless Your Beautiful Hide\u201d, \u201cAnything You Can Do\u201d, a duet with Bettie Hutton and \u201cOh What A Beautiful Morning\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Glen_Campbell_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CTrue_Grit%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Glen Campbell \u2013 \u201cTrue Grit\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Singer and musician Glen Campbell joined the club of John Wayne co-stars known more for their musical fame than acting skills when he was cast as Texas Ranger La Boeuf in \u201cTrue Grit\u201d, released in 1969. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"810\" height=\"887\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/true-grit.jpg\" alt=\"John Wayne in True Grit Real Photo Still\" class=\"wp-image-4473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/true-grit.jpg 810w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/true-grit-502x550.jpg 502w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">source<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Prior to this Campbell had made his name as a much-in-demand session guitarist, playing on numerous recordings for the likes of Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and the Beach Boys as a member of the legendary LA based studio session group known as the Wrecking Crew. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At one point, Campbell even got to join the Beach Boys for a few months in late 1964 \/ early 1965, replacing group leader Brian Wilson on tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Campbell had his first solo hit in 1965 with the song \u201cUniversal Soldier\u201d and two years later his recording of \u201cGentle On My Mind\u201d initiated a string of hits that took him to the top of the charts, winning Glen Campbell worldwide fame as one of the most popular singers of his generation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The singer scored numerous hits on both the Billboard Country and Billboard Hot 100 charts, totalling thirty-four top ten hits across both charts over a twenty-two year period from 1967 to 1989.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of his most famous songs were penned by Jimmy Webb, Campbell recording evergreen Webb classics such as \u201cBy the Time I Get To Phoenix\u201d, \u201cGalveston\u201d and of course \u201cWichita Lineman\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1975 he had one of his biggest hits with \u201cRhinestone Cowboy\u201d and continued to drift in and out of the charts over the next couple of decades, notching up numerous Grammy and Best Country Singer awards and nominations along the way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glen\u2019s acting career prior to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/john-wayne-henry-hathaway\/\">True Grit<\/a>\u201d consisted of a handful of TV appearances in shows such as \u201cThe F.B.I.\u201d and \u201cThe Cool Ones\u201d, but by the late 60s, he was still riding high in the charts so it was inevitable that Hollywood would eventually come calling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His portrayal of Texas Ranger La Boeuf didn\u2019t exactly set the screen alight but it\u2019s true to say he held his own alongside Wayne and Kim Darby and, of course, he got to sing the theme tune which made it into the top ten on the Billboard Charts in late 1969.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Campbell was fairly self-effacing about his role in the film, stating \u201c\u2019True Grit\u2019 was fun to do, but I wasn\u2019t cut out to be an actor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I made John Wayne look so good, he won his only Oscar\u201d. Nevertheless, Campbell went on to play the lead in \u201cNorwood\u201d opposite his \u201cTrue Grit\u201d co-star Kim Darby, a comedy based upon a novel by Charles Portis, who also authored \u201cTrue Grit\u201d, but the film was not a success and Campbell\u2019s acting efforts took second place to his singing career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The singer got his own TV show, \u201cThe Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour\u201d in late 1969 which ran for three years and featured guest stars such as Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Dionne Warwick and Willie Nelson. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Wayne even put in an appearance, guesting on the show with Glen in 1971.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"John_Wayne_Singing_Co-Stars_Part_4\"><\/span>John Wayne Singing Co-Stars Part 4<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The discerning reader might have noticed in this series of articles on John Wayne\u2019s singing co-stars so far that I have yet to include any female singers so we\u2019re going to correct that right here and now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shirley_Temple_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CFort_Apache%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Shirley Temple \u2013 \u201cFort Apache\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As far as I can work out famed child actor Shirley Temple only ever bothered the record charts once, in 1935 to be exact, with her recording of \u201cThe Good Ship Lollipop\u201d, which reached number 4 in the American charts of the day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She first sang the song at the age of five in the film \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0024914\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bright Eyes<\/a>\u201d, and it would forever be recognized as her signature tune, selling over half a million sheet music copies in the mid-1930s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other popular songs associated with Temple include \u201cAnimal Crackers In My Soup\u201d, \u201dPolly-Wolly-Doodle\u201d and \u201cCotton Candy Skies\u201d. In 1945 she released a single of another evergreen Dietrich song \u201cLili Marlene\u201d, which reached number 51 in the American charts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As her acting career declined Dietrich began to tour her stage show, partnering up with Burt Bacharach as her musical arranger in the mid-1950s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They went on to make a number of albums together, one of them featuring her version of the protest song \u201cWhere Have All the Flowers Gone?\u201d which was released along with a recording of the Bob Dylan tune \u201cBlowin\u2019 in the Wind\u201d as a single in 1965.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Maureen_OHara_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CRio_Grande%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CThe_Quiet_Man%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CThe_Wings_of_Eagles%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CMcLintock%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CBig_Jake%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Maureen O\u2019Hara \u2013 \u201cRio Grande\u201d \/ \u201cThe Quiet Man\u201d \/ \u201cThe Wings of Eagles\u201d \/ \u201cMcLintock!\u201d \/ \u201cBig Jake\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now I knew that Maureen O\u2019Hara actually did her own singing in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/quiet-man-behind-scenes\/\">The Quiet Man<\/a>\u201d performing \u201cThe Isle of Innisfree\u201d, the instrumental version of the song serving as the main theme to the film. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"660\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/the-quiet-man-1.jpg\" alt=\"JOhn Wayne &amp; Maureen O'Hara in The Quiet Man\" class=\"wp-image-2719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/the-quiet-man-1.jpg 660w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/the-quiet-man-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>What has surprised me, however, is the number of other films in which the actress also sang, including the Disney 1961 release \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Parent_Trap_(1961_film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Pare<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Parent_Trap_(1961_film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">n<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Parent_Trap_(1961_film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">t Trap<\/a>\u201d, in which O\u2019Hara sang a song entitled \u201cFor Now, For Always\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also sang \u201cIn the Garden\u201d in the funeral sequence for the film \u201cSpencer\u2019s Mountain\u201d, released in 1963 and an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allaboutthewaltons.com\/specials\/sp-spens.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">early adaptation of \u201cThe Walton\u2019s\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Hara\u2019s first two films, \u201cKicking the Moon Around\u201d and \u201cMy Irish Molly\u201d, both released in 1938, were musicals, although I\u2019m still trying to find out if she actually sang in them, and in 1941 she appeared in \u201cThey Met In Argentina\u201d with a score written by Rogers and Hart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Unfortunately, it failed miserably at the box office, killing off any possibility of the actress appearing in another screen musical. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Intriguingly she was seriously considered for the role of Anna in the screen version of \u201cThe King and I\u201d in 1956 but lost out to Deborah Kerr, despite Kerr having to be dubbed whilst O\u2019Hara was obviously able to do her own singing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She recorded two albums, \u201cMaureen O\u2019Hara Sings Love Letters\u201d, released in 1953 and \u201cFavourite Irish Songs\u201d released in 1962. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first of these albums featured popular songs of the time such as \u201cI Only Have Eyes for You\u201d and \u201cThe More I See You\u201d whilst on the second album she covered more traditional Irish fare including \u201cDanny Boy\u201d and \u201cCome Back to Erin\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two years before in 1960 O\u2019Hara appeared in her one and only Broadway musical, \u201cChristine\u201d. Despite a score by Webster and Fain who wrote the songs for the film musical \u201cCalamity Jane\u201d it didn\u2019t find an audience and closed after only twelve performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ever the trooper, O\u2019Hara would still burst into song with her distinctive soprano voice and made singing appearances on TV with famous performers such as Andy Williams and Perry Como. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to O\u2019Hara herself, &#8220;<em>The Dinah Shore Show launched me as a musical guest star. I sang a solo and then joined Dinah and Shirley MacLaine in a song-and-dance number.<\/em>&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Television producers took notice after that, and it marked another turning point in my career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I<em> spent the next few years making the rounds on every top variety show. I appeared many times on The Perry Como Show, The Andy Williams Show, The Garry Moore Show, The Bob Hope Show, the Hallmark Hall of Fame and the Ed Sullivan Show&#8230;to name a few. My favourite performance was singing songs from the 1940s on The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The episode was called \u201cThe Fabulous Fordies\u201d. In this episode, O\u2019Hara sang &#8220;A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, it\u2019s worth pointing out that not only did the actress star in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/clip\/Ugkx0QCprRImlzBYv6Efpu2nFp8GFVxSeyrW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Deadly Companions<\/a>\u201d, Sam Peckinpah\u2019s first big screen Western and released in 1963, she can also be heard performing a song entitled \u201cEmpty Dawn\u201d over the opening and closing credits as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lauren_Bacall_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CBlood_Alley%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%9CThe_Shootist%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Lauren Bacall \u2013 \u201cBlood Alley\u201d \/ \u201cThe Shootist\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/blood-alley.jpg\" alt=\"John Wayne in Blood Alley Lobby card\" class=\"wp-image-3096\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>A rumour has persisted over the years that Lauren Bacall\u2019s voice was dubbed by a very young Andy Williams for the song \u201cHow Little We Know\u201d in the Howards Hawks 1944 Movie \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/To_Have_and_Have_Not_(film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">To Have and Have Not<\/a>\u201d. Here\u2019s Andy\u2019s take on the subject:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Bacall\u2019s singing voice wasn\u2019t quite good enough for a number she had to do in the film. <\/em>[Musical director Dudley Chambers]<em> had been auditioning scores of women, including Bob Hope\u2019s wife, Dolores, to sing for Bacall, but because she had a low, husky voice, none of the singers he auditioned had the sound he was looking for.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He had now decided that a sixteen-year-old boy whose voice had only recently changed was the perfect match for Bacall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> [Years later] Bacall admitted that <em>I dubbed the song<\/em> [\u2018How Little We Know\u2019] for her but said that they wanted to use her own voice saying part of the lyric \u2026 and because my voice didn\u2019t match her speaking voice well enough, in the end, they decided to use her recording, not mine, as originally planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I\u2019m not sure what the truth of it was, but I\u2019m not going to argue about it with the formidable Ms. Bacall!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Either way, Bacall went on to do a small duet with Hoagy Carmichael on the song \u201cAm I Blue\u201d in \u201cTo Have and Have Not\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also exercised her pipes in another Hawks movie, \u201cThe Big Sleep\u201d, singing \u201cAnd Her Tears Flowed Like Wine\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bacall stayed mainly devoted to non-singing roles in her films albeit occasionally bursting into song in films such as \u201cSex and the Single Girl\u201d in which she sang \u201cWhat Is This Thing Called Love\u201d and \u201cThe Fan\u201d released in 1981 with Bacall performing \u201cHearts Not Diamonds\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Also, let none of us forget the brief exchange of a few lines of \u201cWillow, Tit Willow\u201d between her and John Wayne before he meets his maker in \u201cThe Shootist\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bacall initiated a musical career off screen when in 1970 she took on the lead role in the Broadway musical \u201cApplause\u201d, based upon the film \u201cAll About Eve\u201d, Bacall winning a Tony Award for Best Performance By a Leading Actress In a Musical. J<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ust over a decade later she repeated that triumph in another Broadway musical, \u201cWoman of the Year\u201d, based on the earlier Spencer Tracey \/ Katharine Hepburn movie of the same title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Constance_Towers_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CThe_Horse_Soldiers%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Constance Towers \u2013 \u201cThe Horse Soldiers\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Towers is a genuine all round entertainer, having carved out a successful career in film, TV and theatre. And she sings as well. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"350\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/HorseSoldiers-2.jpg\" alt=\"JOhn Wayne in The Horse Soldiers\" class=\"wp-image-2778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/HorseSoldiers-2.jpg 450w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/HorseSoldiers-2-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The actress only appeared once opposite John Wayne, in John Ford\u2019s Civil War saga \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/john-wayne-john-ford-movies-part-i\/\">The Horse Soldiers<\/a>\u201d, playing Southern belle Miss Hannah Hunter of Greenbriar, who starts out spying on JWs as he discusses his behind-the-lines guerrilla raid then falling for him as we all knew she would in the end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She went the extra mile on the film and sang on a tie-in album as well entitled \u201cConstance Towers Sings to The Horse Soldiers\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The album is a mix of songs relevant to the subject matter of the film such as \u201cThere\u2019s Something About A Soldier\u201d and \u201cLorena\u201d which, for those of you in the know will recognise as the basis for both \u201cMartha\u2019s Theme\u201d from \u201cThe Searchers\u201d as well as featuring on the soundtrack to \u201cThe Horse Soldiers\u201d. A promo single featuring \u201cThe Prayer\u201d was also released alongside the album.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"454\" height=\"348\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Constance-Towers2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6724\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Towers showcased her singing talent on the stage in New York productions of musicals such as \u201cCamelot\u201d, \u201cShow Boat\u201d and \u201cCarousel\u201d. In the mid-1970s Towers played Anna to You Brynner\u2019s King in a touring revival of the musical \u201cThe King and I\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stefanie_Powers_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CMcLiintock%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Stefanie Powers \u2013 \u201cMcLiintock!\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Actress and singer Stefanie Powers first shot to worldwide fame and is best remembered for her role as April Dancer in the TV show \u201cThe Girl from U.N.C.L.E.\u201d which debuted in 1966, running for one season and 29 episodes.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Gir-From-UNCLE.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6725\" style=\"width:510px;height:750px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Gir-From-UNCLE.jpg 680w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Gir-From-UNCLE-374x550.jpg 374w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Prior to this, she made her motion picture debut in \u201cTammy Tell Me True\u201d, released in 1961.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She took on a number of supporting roles over the next couple of years before finding herself cast as John Wayne\u2019s daughter Becky in the Western \u201cMcLintock!\u201d. In the film, Stefanie gets to duet with Jerry Van Dyke on the song \u201cJust Right for Me\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She maintained the singing aspect of her career throughout the years, appearing in the London West End in the musical \u201cMatador\u201d in 1991 as well as touring later on in other musical productions including \u201cThe King and I\u201d and \u201cApplause\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2003 she released her debut album \u201cOn the Same Page\u201d in which Stefanie delivered her interpretation of American songbook classics such as \u201cThey All Laughed\u201d and \u201cTen Cents A Dance\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Yvonne_DeCarlo_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CMcLintock%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Yvonne DeCarlo \u2013 \u201cMcLintock!\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a lady that I never even thought about when it comes to singing (and dancing). It turns out, however, that Miss De Carlo really delivered the goods. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"633\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Maureen-OHara-John-Wayne-and-Yvonne-De-Carlo-McLintock-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6726\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Maureen-OHara-John-Wayne-and-Yvonne-De-Carlo-McLintock-2.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Maureen-OHara-John-Wayne-and-Yvonne-De-Carlo-McLintock-2-695x550.jpeg 695w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>She was only an actress capable of performing serious roles but, possessed of a mezzo-soprano voice, she was also at home in Hollywood musicals of which the following, along with the songs she sang, are just a few:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLouie Sands and Jim McGee \u2013 \u201cRiver Lady\u201d (1948)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor Every Man There\u2019s A Woman\u201d \u2013 \u201cCasbah\u201d (1948)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrankie and Johnnie\u201d \/ \u201cClancy Lowered the Boom\u201d \u2013 \u201cThe Gal Who Took the West\u201d (1949)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll Follow You\u201d \u2013 \u201cFort Algiers\u201d (1953)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou Belong To My Heart\u201d (Duet with Vittorio Gassman) \u2013 \u201cSombrero\u201d 1953 (Cut from film)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the mid-1950s she released a number of singles including \u201cTake It Or Leave It\u201d in 1955 on the Capitol label and \u201cThat\u2019s Love\u201d in 1957 on Imperial. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latter song and the B-side \u201cThe Secret of Love\u201d indicate De Carlo had the talent to make a hit record if only the labels she recorded for had only put in a bit more effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1957 De Carlo put out an album entitled \u201cYvonne De Carlo Sings\u201d, an \u2018incredibly cool\u2019 recording by some accounts in which she applied her voice to contemporary classics such as \u201cBlue Moon\u201d and \u201cOne for My Baby\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De Carlo was accompanied on the album by John Towner and his orchestra, Towner being the middle name of the now overwhelmingly famous film soundtrack composer John Williams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like a lot of her contemporaries, Yvonne De Carlo eventually turned her attention to Broadway and in 1970 she took appeared in the original production of \u201cFollies\u201d, a musical in which De Carlo got to sing the show-stopper song \u201cI\u2019m Still Here\u201d. She continued her stage singing career in other musicals such as \u201cNo No Nanette\u201d and \u201cApplause\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ann-Margret_%E2%80%93_%E2%80%9CThe_Train_Robbers%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Ann-Margret \u2013 \u201cThe Train Robbers\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ann-Margret made an impressive dent in the charts in 1961 with her recording of the song \u201cI Just Don\u2019t Understand\u201d, reaching number 16 in the Billboard Hot 100 charts. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/anne-Margret-3.jpg\" alt=\"Ann Margret\" class=\"wp-image-3240\" style=\"width:512px;height:342px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/anne-Margret-3.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/anne-Margret-3-728x486.jpg 728w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/anne-Margret-3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>There are two claims to fame for the song, one being that it was apparently the first record to feature a fuzz-tone guitar. The other is that two years later in 1963 The Beatles covered it for a live radio performance in the UK, their version eventually released on \u201cLive at the BBC Volume 1\u201d in 1994.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The actress\/singer was a bona fide recording star right from the beginning of her career, releasing her first LP \u201cAnd Here She Is\u2026 Ann-Margret\u201d in 1961. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dubbed the \u2018female Elvis\u2019 at one point, she appeared in three screen musicals in the early 1960s, \u201cBye Bye Birdie\u201d, \u201cState Fair\u201d and the Elvis vehicle \u201cViva Las Vegas\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Straight acting parts took centre stage after that with the occasional appearance in other screen musicals such as \u201cThe Swinger\u201d, released in 1966, and the screen version of \u201cTommy\u201d, based on the famous rock opera by The Who in which Ann performed the song \u201cBeans and Champagne\u201d whilst covered in erm\u2026 champagne and beans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the mid-1960s she played Vegas and over the years appeared in a number of TV specials that show-cased her singing skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, the actress has recorded over a dozen albums with her last recording, \u201cGod Is Love: The Gospel Sessions 2\u201d released in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"JW_Singing_Co-Stars_Part_5\"><\/span>JW Singing Co-Stars Part 5<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a bid to make our list of John Wayne\u2019s singing co-stars as definitive as possible here\u2019s a final roundup of all those actor\/actress singers who didn\u2019t make it into the previous four articles on the subject. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a nod to brevity, I\u2019m not going to list all of the films each co-star listed below appeared in with John Wayne. I\u2019m sure most of you will know what the films are anyway.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Joan_Blondell\"><\/span>Joan Blondell<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The actress played opposite JW in the 1942 drama \u201cLady for a Night\u201d in which she played the manager of the Memphis Belle nightclub. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"666\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/lady-for-a-night-1.jpg\" alt=\"John Wayne &amp; Joan Blondell in Lady For a Night\" class=\"wp-image-3002\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/lady-for-a-night-1.jpg 666w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/lady-for-a-night-1-366x550.jpg 366w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/lady-for-a-night-1-300x450.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 666px) 100vw, 666px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Prior to this, Blondell captivated cinema audiences with her performance of \u201cRemember My Forgotten Man\u201d in the 1933 Hollywood musical \u201cGold Diggers of 1933\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More of an actress rather than a singing personality Blondell was introduced to a much young audience when she appeared in a cameo in the hugely successful big screen version of \u201cGrease\u201d, released in 1978.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dale_Evans\"><\/span>Dale Evans<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Better known as the wife of King of the Cowboys Roy Rogers, Evans played saloon girl Cuddles Walker in the melodrama \u201cIn Old Oklahoma\u201d (aka \u201cWar of the Wildcats\u201d), released in 1943, although she didn\u2019t share any scenes with Wayne. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"795\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/in-old-oklahoma-2.jpg\" alt=\"Poster of In Old Oklahoma with John Wayne\" class=\"wp-image-3055\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/in-old-oklahoma-2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/in-old-oklahoma-2-708x550.jpg 708w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/in-old-oklahoma-2-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Dale also penned Roy\u2019s evergreen theme \u201cHappy Trails\u201d, which featured as the outro on many episodes of the \u201cThe Roy Rogers\u201d TV show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ken_Curtis\"><\/span>Ken Curtis&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ken Curtis initially entered showbusiness as a singer, in 1941 replacing none other than Frank Sinatra in the Tommy Dorsey band and cutting a couple of records with Dorsey until Curtis was himself replaced by Dick Haymes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a stint with bandleader Shep Fields and his orchestra Curtis eventually joined the Sons of the Pioneers in 1951, singing lead vocal on one of their biggest hits \u201cGhost Riders in the Sky\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"396\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/ken-curtis.jpg\" alt=\"Ken Curtis in the Searchers\" class=\"wp-image-4065\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Once Ken married John Ford\u2019s daughter Barbara in the early 1950s he found himself acting for his father-in-law in a number of films starting with \u201cRio Grande\u201d, released in 1950. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s him singing lead with the Sons of the Pioneers on \u201cI\u2019ll Take You Home Gain, Kathleen\u201d, \u201cCattle Call\u201d, \u201cMy Gal is Purple\u201d and \u201cDown by the Glen Side\u201d. He also famously serenaded Vera Miles on guitar as Charlie McCorry in \u201cThe Searchers\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curtis got to stretch his vocal chords on behalf of John Wayne in \u201cThe Alamo\u201d, he and Joan O\u2019Brien duetting on \u201cTennessee Babe\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Joan_OBrien\"><\/span>Joan O\u2019Brien<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After putting out a single on the Verve label in 1957, \u201cDear Love One\u201d, the actress singer collaborated on an album entitled \u201cSong for Your Boyfriend\u201d in 1959 with three other female singers, Marlene Willis, Linda Leigh and Linda Lawson. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Brien contributed vocals on three songs including \u201cDear Love Me\u201d and \u201cCome On Home, All\u2019s Forgiven\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"649\" height=\"499\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Joan-OBrien-Worlds-State-Fair.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6760\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>A year after playing JW\u2019s love interest in \u201cThe Comancheros\u201d Joan could be found as Elvis Presley\u2019s love interest in the 1963 musical \u201cIt Happened At the World\u2019s State Fair\u201d, holding hands and duetting with him on the final song \u201cHappy Ending\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Chill_Wills\"><\/span>Chill Wills<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As lead singer with the Avalon Boys back in the 1940s Chill Wills can be seen crooning away in the background in the classic 1937 Laurel &amp; Hardy cowboy \u201cWay Out West\u201d as they perform a dance routine to the song \u201cCommence to Dancing\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/chill-wills-way-out-west.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6761\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Eventually turning to full-time acting Chill got the chance to vocalise for JW in \u201cThe Alamo\u201d, delivering his version of \u201cHere\u2019s to the Ladies\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Oliver_Hardy\"><\/span>Oliver Hardy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking time out from his comedy films with Stan Laurel, Hardy teamed up with John Wayne in the 1949 Western \u201cThe Fighting Kentuckian\u201d, he and Duke performing a small duet on a song entitled \u201cEight-Hundred Miles to Go\u201d, sung to the tune of \u201cShe\u2019ll Be Coming Round the Mountain\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/fighting-kentuckian-1.jpg\" alt=\"The Fighting Kentuckian poster with John Wayne &amp; Vera Ralston\" class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Glenn\u2019s earliest known appearance in a JW film is as a cowhand in \u201cThe Range Feud\u201d in 1931, going on to play a bad guy in the serial \u201cThe Hurricane Express\u201d and then numerous uncredited bit parts in other Wayne titles such as \u201cThe Star Packer\u201d and \u201cWestward Ho\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having earlier arrived in Hollywood as a member of the Arizona Wranglers band, Strange also took on singing duties as well, and it\u2019s his voice you can hear doubling for JW in \u201cThe New Frontier\u201d, released in 1935.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"566\" \u201cWestward Ho\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Harry_Carey_Jr\"><\/span>Harry Carey Jr<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Possessed of a pleasing baritone voice, Harry Carey Jr. aka \u2018Dobe\u2019 Carey tried his hand at a singing career in the 1940s but when that didn\u2019t work out for him he turned to acting instead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A member of the John Ford stock company he got the chance to sing in a number of the director\u2019s movies, starting with \u201c3 Godfathers\u201d in which he sang, upon being given the command \u201cgo ahead kid\u201d by Duke, \u201cBeautiful River\u201d over the grave of the recently departed Mildred Natwick. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"587\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/3-godfathers.jpg\" alt=\"John Wayne in 3 Godfathers\" class=\"wp-image-5819\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dan_Dailey\"><\/span>Dan Dailey<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The ever-smiling Dan Dailey is probably best remembered as more of a song and dance man rather than a serious actor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After appearing in a number of Broadway musicals in the late 1930s, Dailey won a contract with MGM and was soon featuring in screen musicals including \u201cLady Be Good\u201d and \u201cPanama Hattie\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signing next with 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century Fox studios he appeared in a string of musicals over the next few years such as \u201cMother Wore Tights\u201d, \u201cCall Me Mister\u201d, with Betty Grable and \u201cThere\u2019s No Business Like Show Business\u201d alongside Marilyn Monroe and Ethel Merman. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"759\" two films for John Ford in the early 1950s, \u201cWhen Willie Comes Marching Home\u201d and \u201cWhat Price Glory?\u201c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After moving studios to MGM and more musicals Dailey got to work with Ford a third time as \u2018Jughead\u2019 Carson, sidekick to John Wayne in \u201cThe Wings of Eagles\u201d, Ford\u2019s homage to aviator hero and scriptwriter Frank \u2018Spig\u2019 Wead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although \u2018Jughead\u2019 has absolutely no experience whatsoever when it comes to matters of a medical nature he miraculously cures Wead\u2019s broken neck by serenading his paralysed friend with a banjo whilst repeating the phrase \u201cI\u2019m gonna move that toe\u201d and before you know it Spig is as right as rain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sophia_Loren\"><\/span>Sophia Loren<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After appearing in \u201cLegend of the Lost\u201d the actress enjoyed a brief period of fame as a singer when she duetted with comedian Peter Sellers on a couple of singles to promote their film \u201cThe Millionairess\u201d in 1961, \u201cBangers and Mash\u201d and \u201cGoodness Gracious Me\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was all I was going to write about Loren\u2019s singing career but I then discovered the release of a CD from 2003 called \u201cLucky To Be A Woman\u201d which contains a whole bunch of recordings the actress made over the years, so my apologies to La Loren wherever she may be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One review of \u201cLucky To Be A Woman\u201d refers to Loren as \u201ca slightly limited singer\u201d but then goes on to rave about some of the songs on the CD that apparently contradict the suggestion that the actress couldn\u2019t sing. Maureen O'Hara\" class=\"wp-image-2785\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/McLintock-3.jpg 545w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/McLintock-3-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>More of a TV celebrity than a big screen performer Van Dyke is best remembered as Luther van Damme in the sitcom Coach, which aired for nine years from six years from 1989 to 1997.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Yul_Brynner\"><\/span>Yul Brynner<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside of his dramatic acting career, Brynner is mostly remembered for his role as King Monkgut in the musical \u201cThe King and I\u201d, a role the actor played in both the original Broadway production in 1951 and the film version, released in 1956.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hugh_OBrian\"><\/span>Hugh O\u2019Brian<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Capitalizing on the success of the TV show \u201cThe Legend of Wyatt Earp\u201d, O\u2019Brian recorded an album released in 1956 in which he sang his version of the theme tune along with a number of other songs including \u201cDown in the Meadow\u201d, \u201cRoll Out the Wagon\u201d and \u201cBoot Hill\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a personal note, I remember as a young boy watching him on the British variety show \u201cSunday Night at the London Palladium\u201d performing the song \u201cTrouble\u201d from the Broadway musical \u201cThe Music Man\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"920\" height=\"728\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/john-wayne-the-shootist-bar-scene-3.jpg\" alt=\"The Shootist bar scene lobby card\" class=\"wp-image-4474\" style=\"width:460px;height:364px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/john-wayne-the-shootist-bar-scene-3.jpg 920w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/john-wayne-the-shootist-bar-scene-3-695x550.jpg 695w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 920px) 100vw, 920px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">source<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Hugh O\u2019Brian will be forever remembered as the last actor to be shot on screen by John Wayne in \u201cThe Shootist\u201d, released in 1976. I am fairly convinced this had nothing to do with the actor&#8217;s short singing career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Richard_Attenborough\"><\/span>Richard Attenborough<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Starring opposite John Wayne in the British-set thriller \u201cBrannigan\u201d, it\u2019s fair to say that Richard Attenborough isn\u2019t exactly known for his singing talent, although this did not stand in his way when he sang \u201cI\u2019ve Never Seen Anything Like It\u201d in the 1967 screen adaptation of \u201cDr. Doolittle\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also played the part of Jacob in a direct-to-video film version of \u201cJoseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat\u201d in which he sang the song \u201cJoseph\u2019s Coat\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And finally:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rock_Hudson\"><\/span>Rock Hudson<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Rock-Hudson-Pillow-Talk.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6763\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Rock-Hudson-Pillow-Talk.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/mostlywesterns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Rock-Hudson-Pillow-Talk-367x550.jpeg 367w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In 1959 Rock recorded a version of the theme to \u201cPillow Talk\u201d which was released on the Decca label. Like a lot of \u2018one-off\u2019 recordings such as this, the disc failed to bother the charts and as far as I\u2019m aware that was the beginning and end of Mr. Hudson\u2019s singing career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Laurence_Harvey\"><\/span>Laurence Harvey<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Harvey was for some strange reason given the task of recording the song \u201cThe Long and the Short and the Tall\u201d to accompany the release of the film of the same name on Columbia Records in 1961. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As to the success of the disc and the effect it had on Harvey\u2019s bid to become a chart-topping crooner it\u2019s probably fair to say he and Rock Hudson had a lot in common in that respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>If anyone feels that our five-part article on JWs singing co-stars is missing anyone of note then please feel free to comment below and let us know who that might be and we\u2019ll update the article accordingly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the first of three, possibly four-part article on what I hope will be a definitive list of the numerous co-stars of JW who were also known for their singing careers.
